This is another one of those insanely nerdy strips that only three people will get. And for those who do, my hat is off. I do have to admit that the metaphors are kinda stretched…specifically the magikarp deadlock one. Deadlock would occur in the system if two pokemon use an attack at the same time which waits until the other one attacks. Both would end up waiting for the other to attack and then—yup. I think I just lost those three who got it and stayed long enough to try and read this post.
Next update Monday.

Wouldn’t Bide work with the metaphor?
Yep, bide would have worked better. Still, nothing quite as iconic as a magikarp fight. Or a harden-only metapod fight. Oh! Or a ditto—
Too bad Encore doesn’t work in itself. D:
I swear I typed ‘on’.
dude, you should have totally used a logger in the finally instead of printing
Ha! I’m one of the three people.
Yeah, me too B)
Ooh, ooh. person #2
that’s actually live-lock not deadlock. Good toon 🙂
Me, and my roommate got this. There’s 2 people of the 3 to get it.
If my little yellow cartridge had to manage threads, synchronize methods, and throw exceptions all while I had my nose pressed to my gameboy color, I would be so impressed.
I think the turn based and PP systems (struggle) mostly fixed deadlock issues, but that’s a pretty interesting way of looking at the problem. I think I might use that to teach people about deadlock in the future! 🙂
I don’t even play pokemon (I almost typed pokeman, LOL) or program, but this all rang familiar and amusing for me because my husband loves both..well, mostly pokemon, but he’s good at programming, too.
Maybe ’cause I’m a geek with geeky friends and habits like attending conventions, or maybe because my husband likes to emphasize how cool pokemon is and how I should start playing it, but I’m pretty sure many more people can at least appreciate your ‘Intro to Programming’. It’s one of my favorites.
Also, I’ve been reading since you were a link from that QC comic about 10,000 years ago. From where I am, things seem to be going well at Insert Life Here. I’m pleased that it has never died; instead, it just gets better! Also also, I think I get the “artistic tick,” too – it’s great to have that acknowledged as something that actually happens.
Thanks for your comic – it’s one of only about 5 that I regularly read / check in on.
We actually read this in my programming class the other day — the array/list section pertained to what we were talking about…kudos
Whoa, that is just…whoa. I’m honored. Mind if I ask which school this was?
Wish I’d had this back when I was still CS.
In AC it would be when in a fight both assasin’s try to counter, right?
